Broker and Freight Forwarder Bond Law begins October 1

The FMCSA will be implementing a new broker law beginning Oct. 1 and it will affect anyone acting as a broker or a freight forwarder, including motor carriers who broker loads. The law states that they are required to register and obtain broker or freight forwarder authority from FMCSA. Included in the list of provisions is the bond increase from $10,000 to $75,000 for brokers and freight forwarders. Furthermore, "brokers and freight forwarders will also now be subject to a minimum $75,000 financial security requirement."

Trucking Term of the Day: Bill of Lading (BOL)

A paper document that describes the cargo being transported, including weight, size, origin and destination. This document serves as an agreement between the shipper and carrier, acknowledging the receipt of the freight for transport.

Cargo Thieves are becoming very tactful 

Have you been a victim of cargo theft? If so, you are not alone, it seems to be a growing trend and the cargo thieves are becoming very tactful in how they operate. "Travelers Investigative Services, explained that these new “tactics” fall into three categories: identity theft, fictitious pickups and misdirected loads/fraudulent carriers." Fleet Owner reported the strategy of these thieves: "Rather than commit “straight theft,” where loads are physically stolen from parking lots or terminals – and risking getting spotted and/or potentially be involved in a high speed chase – he said cargo thieves are trying to be more “strategic” about thefts so they can better pinpoint and steal specific types of cargo."

Spousal coverage to be cut by some companies

Insurance is the big topic of every company lateley, especially since "some employers are considering adding a surcharge to cover the health care expenses of their workers’ spouses." The Salt Lake Tribune goes on to say, "Others, like package deliverer United Parcel Service Inc., are excluding spouses from coverage if they are able to get insurance through another employer."
